'Candy colored Portobello Road (365/145)' by JenniPenni

I love rows of multi-coloured houses! I think they are so pretty and you'd have to be happy living there. I do wonder though how the house colours were chosen. Did all the residents pick a colour out of a hat? And what if someone wants to paint their house? Does it have to go to a special colour commitee? I am thinking about this way too much aren't I?!

I think this picture is brilliant. The houses are such great colours but what makes it really come alive is the fantastic sky. The photo works much better, I think, for having those amazing clouds that it would have done if it were just a completely clear day.

  1. lol, that is exactly what I think. Here they do this along the sea front houses and it looks just amazing, so bright and cheerful and I have heard that they do have a residents committee that discuss the colours !! Jen

  3. Everyone must have to have some sort of discussion in order to coordinate colors, no? Otherwise what if there were two of the same in a row? So cheery!

  4. I have a row of houses like that near where I live. They are on a hill near a bridge that goes over the local river. Ballamory houses my kids always call them. They do look lovely.

  6. I love wandering down Portobello Road. After returning from a visit there one day, I remarked to my then girlfriend that George Orwell used to live there. Her reply, "Wasn't he on Big Brother?" Needless to say it didn't last. Beautiful photo, think I'm going to enjoy perusing your site.

  7. Oh I just love this photo. I love Georgian houses anyway (I mean I have a bit of an obsession actually) but the colours are amazing. I'm like you I was wondering about the rules too - who decides who gets what colour or if it's upto the house owner to choose? Interesting...
